STARTER DOES NOT SPIN

STEPS TO DETERMINE WHY YOUR STARTER DOES NOT WORK WHEN THE KEY IS TURNED

THE STARTER IS THE LAST OF A LARGE LIST OF THINGS HAVE TO OCCUR FOR THE RESULT

OF THE STARTING PROCESS.  TO CHECK THE PROBLEM YOU MUST WORK BACKWARDS

TO THE KEY AND YOU CAN KNOW WHAT IS WRONG

1) STEP ONE

ON THE REAR OF THE BENDEX DRIVE ON THE TOP OF THE STARTER THERE ARE FOUR TERMINALS

ONE AT 12 O'CLOCK IS THE MAIN LARGE 12 V INPUT

TWO AT 3 O'CLOCK IS S TERMINAL TRIGGER

THREE AT 6 O'CLOCK IS OUTPUT FOR MOTOR

FOUR AT 9 O'CLOCK IGN TERMINAL 12 V OUTPUT

 

CHECK #1 JUMP WITH A SCREWDRIVER FROM 12 TO 6

RESULT THE MOTOR WILL SPIN BUT NOT THE ENGINE

THIS PRESUMES GOOD BATTERY AND TIGHT TERMINALS

IF LARGE SPARK COMES OUT INSTEAD THE STARTER IS BAD

 

CHECK #2 JUMP THE 12 TO 3

RESULT SHOULD BE THE STARTER RUNS AND CRANKS ENGINE.

 

CHECK #3 JUMP THE LARGE TERMINALS ON THE SLAVE SOLENOID

RESULT SAME AS CHECK #2

 

CHECK #4 JUMP THE RED HEAVY INPUT WIRE OF SOLENOID

TO THE SMALL YELLOW/RED WIRE ON THE SMALL TERMINAL OF SOLENOID.

RESULT EITHER A CLICK OR SPIN THE MOTOR

IF NO CLICK CHECK FOR GROUND ON SOLENOID OR IT IS BAD

CLICK ONLY SOLENOID BAD

MOTOR SPINS THEN GO ON.

 

CHECK #5

FIND THE SMALL YELLOW WIRE IN THE HARNESS JUST BEFORE THE PLUG

JUMP 12V POS TO THE YELLOW/RED TRACER WIRE.

RESULT  IF THE SOLENOID WAS GOOD OR IT WAS CHANGED THEN TEST

RESULT ENGINE SPINS.

 

CHECK #6

  FIND THE YELLOW/RED WIRE IN THE HARNESS JUST BEHIND THE CONTROL BOX

JUMP 12V TO WIRE.

RESULT MOTOR CRANKS

 

CHECK #7

FIND THE YELLOW/RED WIRE BETWEEN THE CONTROL BOX AND IGNITION SWITCH

JUMP 12 V TO THE WIRE

RESULT IF THE ENGINE CRANKED AT #6 BUT NOT #7

THE NEUTRAL SWITCH IS TRIPPED

EITHER THE SHIFTER IS IN GESR OR THE SWITCH IS FAULTY

 

CHECK #8

JUMP THR RED POS TERMINAL ON THE REAR OF IGN SWITCH TO THE

YELLOW/RED OR THE LT BLUE IF THE NEUTRAL CONNECTS DIRECTLY IF NO YELLOW JUMPER

RESULT MOTOR CRANKS?

IF IT CRANKS HERE BUT NOT WITH KEY THE IGN SWITCH IS BAD OR CONNECTIONS ARE NOT GOOD

IF GAUGES DO NOT JUMP DURING 'ON' POSITION CHECK FUSE TO IGN SWITCH.

NOTE

AS SOON AS YOU PASS A TEST THAT WILL NOT WORK, YOU JUST PASSED THE BAD PART.  

 

UPON TURN OF THE KEY, THE SWITCH TAKES 12V FROM THE FUSE AND PUTS IT DOWN

THE YELLOW/RED WIRE .  IT CONTINUES THROUGH THE NEUTRAL SWITCH IF IT IS CLOSED

DOWN THE WIRE TO THE PLUG AND THRU THE PLUG TO THE ENGINE HARNESS TO THE SMALL

YELLOW THEMINAL ON THE SOLENOID WHERE IT CLICKS AND TAKES 12V FROM THE RED INPUT LARGE

TERMINAL AND OUT OF THE LARGE YELLOW TERMINAL TO THE 'S' TERMINAL OF THE BENDIX DRIVE AT 3 O'CLOCK

THE DRIVE SENDS THE GEAR OF THE STARTER INTO THE FLYWHEEL AND THEN SENDS 12 V OUT OF THE 6'O CLOCK

 WIRE INTO THE BODY OF THE STARTER TO MAKE IT TURN.
