1) IGNITION PROBLEMS FOR MERCRRUISER POINTS

TROBLESHOOTING THE POINT SET DISTRIBUTORS IS RELATIVELY

SIMPLE. FIRST THE VOLTAGE TO THE COIL MUST BE CHECKED

WITH THE POINTS CLOSED THE VOLTAGE FROM THE COILK POS TO GROUND

IS 7-8 VOLTS BUT DURING THE CRANKING THE MOTOR IT GOES TO 12 VOLTS

IF THE VOLTAGE DOES NOT DROP WHEN THE CRANKING STOPS WILL

PROBABLY INDICATE A BAD BALAST RESISTOR OR RESISTOR WIRE.  THIS WILL

USUALLY CAUSE THE COIL TO OVERHEAT.

1) CHECKING PARTS IN THE DISTRIBUTER

EASY OVERALL CHECK FOR COMPONENTS IS AS THIS

WITH IGN ON AND THE CAP OFF, ROTOR REMOVED, AND THE POINTS OPEN.

PLACE A SPARK GAP ON THE COIL WIRE OR HOLD THE DIST END CLOSE TO THE BLOCK

TO DETECT FIRE TO THE PLUGS.

PUT A SCREWDRIVER BLADE BETWEEN THE TIPS

OF THE POINTS TO CONNECT THEM TOGETHER THEN REMOVE THE BLADE

EVERY TIME THE BLADE IS REMOVED THE COIL SHOULD FIRE.  IF NOT EITHER THE EASY SHIFT

SWITCH IS TRIPPED OR THE POINT SET IS INTERNALLY GROUNDED.  TAKE THE WIRE FROM THE

EASY SHIFT SWITCH OFF OF THE COIL AND RE TEST.  IF THE SCREWDRIVER DOES NOT WORK STILL

REMOVE  THE COIL WIRE AND CONDENSER WIRE AND HOLD THEM TOGETHER.  TOUCH THE PLATE

AND RELEASE TO GET A SPARK.  IF NOT THE COIL IS FAULTY.

GOING BACK AND ASSUME THE SPARK COMES WHEN THE SCREWDRIVER TOUCHES THE

POINT TIPS. THIS INDICATES THE IGNITION SYSTEM IS GOOD EXCEPT POINTS.  NEXT

SPIN THE ENGINE AND SEE IF YOU GET SPARK. IF THE SCREWDRIVER CAUSES SPARK BUT

SPINNING THE ENGINE DOES NOT REPLACE THE POINTS AND CONDENSER.

RESET THE GAP AND TIME THE DISTRIBUTER.
